WELCOME TO FIFTH GRADE (2020-2021)!
Looking forward to a great year!
July 2020: Stay tuned for updates as we learn what the new year will have in store for us. I am hoping we can be back in class, utillizing all of the great programs that we normally have. I know it will be different no matter what, but am trying to prepare myself for the challenge and goal of keeping everyone safe.
In a normal year...
We have an exciting year planned for our fifth graders. In addition to our regular academic endeavors, our classroom hosts the Knight Squad. We have expanded upon the program which starts in fourth grade. We still go out into the classrooms in our school and help teach about a variety of technology related things, but we also incorporate more technology within our every day learning. We are also involved with the Knightline News which is published weekly (in video format). You can see some of our past and present broadcasts by going to www.theknightsquad.wordpress.com.
TECH AS A TOOL
One of our goals is to help students realizes that technology is a tool, used to impact and make their lives more productive. You can never seem to take the "game" out of a fifth grader, but hopefully they will understand that there is so much more to the world of technology than gaming. We do not allow free use of games during our day at school. We have various ways to monitor and control gaming and social media. In case you were wondering, students in grades K-5 have access to 1-1 chromebooks or iPads. They are not allowed to take them home. In fifth grade we also have access to a program that will become a large part of their future schooling. It is called Schoology. Stay tuned for our Fall open house where you can learn more about fifth grade and how we roll, preparing them for middle school.
READING, MATH, SOCIAL, SCIENCE
These are just some of the many things we incorporate into our classrooms. Of course, we are still reading, writing, and doing a lot of math, science and social studies. We have a brand new social studies curriculum to work with this coming year. A new teacher for our team will be determined in the next few weeks as well. Mr. Altermatt has taken a job in South Dakota.
CONTACT ME
Since we are so busy during the day, it can be difficult to get in touch with me. Please leave a message via Seesaw or with the office and I'll get back to you as soon as possible. I try to check my email before school and after school every day. Seesaw is more readily available but if I don't respond, please assume I didn't get the message.
